Valachi Downs C'bury Breeders (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

The track at Riccarton today was officially posted as a Good3 but several of the times on the day said that was not believable plus no leader won. After an awful slow track on Saturday where just one leader scored (over 2500m in a two-turn race where track bias is negated to some extent), it has become the rarest of species this carnival so far after two days. The ten winners in race order and where they turned for home were tenth (wide and four lengths of lead, sixth (two lengths from lead), fourth (wide and a length from lead), led (four –wide turning in), fifth (widest and three lengths from lead), fifth (two lengths from lead), seventh (four lengths from lead), second (outer), fifth (widest and two and a half lengths from lead) and third. It should be noted More Wonder in R4 was at $1.60 and sat fourth the outer before coming up four-off to lead turning in, so would have beaten them no matter what. This G3 fillies and mares 1400m drew a modest field only and saw the Australian bred Kiwi Ida score with authority by two lengths in 1:22.91, the best time of the day at this trip but for a Good3 that is nothing flash whatsoever. The 4yo mare was back and wide with cover and on a day no leaders won and riders scouted wider the run home on supposed Good3 footing, so the visuals were damning of the track. She came up from tenth then eighth and wide to be fifth and the deepest runner turning in then surged to lead at the 200m. Kiwi Ida has never won past 1200m until today and has clearly strengthened up well for this season as she recorded her seventh win in twenty-four starts, a decent enough win strike rate. She has won on most types of footing and after recording a Listed win and three Listed placings, she gets a G3 win at her second try at that level. The Precious One was wide on the pace early then settled fourth the outer before being sent up again and second turning for home. The also 4yo mare led at the 300m but could not repel the surge of the winner but was a clear second at the line. Rideitlikeyoustoleit the rank outsider was wide before taking the lead and running clear in front until being headed at the 300m, so did well to cling onto third beaten three and a half lengths. Respin and Lake Chalice ran okay races and Morse Code was running on from last but the rest were ordinary or shocking. The last three home Montoya Star, Bring To The Block and Beneficial were awful and only the last name had a partial excuse as wide working for the opening 600m but she still stopped to be beaten over twenty lengths. The track seemed patchy and may have been inconsistent hence the shocking efforts by many on the day to be beaten out of sight. There will be future winners galore out of this in the South Island and the North Island trio of Bella Court, Unfazed and Bring To The Block probably cannot wait to get back home onto less perplexing footing.
