WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This Listed Open Handicap over 1400m saw the first four runners on settling filling those positions over the line with He Kin Fly getting the win The rising 7yo gelding carrying 58.5kg was wide early then moved up second the outer before getting cover to be fourth in a good spot after 400m. He was third poised at the 200m then second at the 150m before taking the lead at the 20m to score by half a length in 1:24.18 and record his eighth win in twenty-eight starts. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were eighth (four-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), thirteenth (ten-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), led (alongside the fence and two lengths clear), tenth (ten-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (alongside the fence and a length clear), fourth (four-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and fifteenth (four-off the inside and twelve lengths from the leader). He Kin Fly was winning his second Listed race this year and since being rejected from Hong Kong where no longer competitive he has found New Zealand depth very easy and has won five races in two years. The time worryingly was barely better than the following Benchmark 72 (five classes inferior) event run and won in 1:24.22. Prosecco, a Central Districts visitor and four-win mare only at her last start could only finish seventh in a Benchmark72 in the North Island but she could get a Listed second in the South Island in an Open Handicap. That along tells you everything you need to know about actual depth. The rising 7yo mare won a Benchmark65 (six classes inferior to a Listed Open Handicap) two starts ago and before that her last win came way back in February of 2017. Today was her second ever attempt at Blacktype after a G3 miss against her own sex in March of 2017. Kiwi Ida, a nine-win mare trailed third the inner and worked off then led at the 200m but could not hold on and was headed at the 200m then lost second on the line. Moyrabella set the pace and kicked clear but was headed at the 200m and weakened to finish fourth beaten almost three lengths. She was having a first ever race in Open Class let alone a Blacktype race. Disturbance ended up sixth and four-wide early before being fifth midrace and fought on gamely considering he carried 60kg. Prinze Of Oz settled back as usual then moved up wide near the home turn before fighting on for sixth beaten just over four lengths. Dynamic plugged on for seventh and the stablemate Elfee was ditto for eighth beaten just under six lengths. Macy never got into the race while Tomm Jones and Luke were very poor. This was not a Listed level race and the fact Prosecco could finish second is the key tell for actual field depth.
