Deep Impact sires 159th stakes winner
Having shed her maiden tag at the third time of asking at Kempton on July 1, Katara (3 f ex Asyad by New Approach) took the step into stakes company with ease when landing the Chalice Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at Newmarket on Saturday and in the process handed the late Shadai Stallion Station sire Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) with his 159th stakes winner.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the three-year-old filly proved far too good for her rivals, scampering away inside the final furlong to beat Expressionism (Galileo) by four lengths with another length and a quarter back to Cosmic Princess (Kingman) in third.
The three-year-old filly is out of Group 3-placed New Approach (Galileo) mare Asyad, who is herself a daughter of multiple Group 1-winning mare Elle Danzig (Danzig Roi), making her a half-sister to three-time Group 3 winner Elle Shadow (Shamardal) and Listed-winning trio El Comodin (Monsun) Ella Gala (Galileo) and Elle Memory (Maxios).
Elle Danzig is also the grandam of King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Balios (Shamardal), while this is also the family of Group 1 winner Empoli (Halling).
Deep Impact’s progeny is headed by 47 Group 1 winners, including Saxon Warrior and Tosen Stardom, who will stand at Coolmore Stud and Woodside Park Stud respectively this spring. .
Deep Impact, who stood at the Shadai Stallion Station for his whole breeding career, died last year.
