Charlatan (3 c ex Authenticity by Quiet American) maintained his unbeaten record with an impressive victory in the first division of Saturday's Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at Oaklawn Park and in doing so provided his sire Speightstown (Gone West) with his 18th Grade 1 winner.

The Bob Baffert-trained colt, who was bred by Stonestreet and raced by a group that includes his breeder and SF Racing, was taken straight to the front from the gates and held that position to beat Basin (Liam's Map) by six lengths whilst Gouverneur Morris (Constitution) was a further neck back in third.

Charlatan was bought for US$700,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He made his debut over six furlongs in February at Santa Anita and then won over a mile at the same course in March.

The colt is out of the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Quiet American (Fappiano) mare Authenticity who has also produced the Listed winner Hanalei Moon (Malibu Moon). His second dam is Court Of Appeal (Deputy Minister) who is a half-sister to four winners including the Listed winner Statement (Seattle Slew) being out of dual Grade 3 winner Appealing Missy (Lypheor).

Authenticity was bought for US$1.2 million by Stonestreet at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton The November Sale and she has a yearling filly by Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) and was covered by Curlin (Smart Strike) earlier this year.

Now the sire of 112 stakes winners, Speightstown stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky where his 2020 fee was set at US$70,000.
