Australian-bred horses swept the G1 races at Kranji in Singapore on Saturday night led by Not A Single Doubt’s outstanding Hong Kong-based gelding Southern Legend.
The Caspar Fownes-trained Southern Legend made it back-to-back wins in the G1 Kranji Mile, having gone 12 months without a win since his last visit to Singapore.
Having started his career in Australia, the Boniface Ho-owned Southern Legend is Not A Single Doubt’s all-time leading earner with his prizemoney now almost $A5 million after Saturday’s win under Zac Purton.
Ho’s Australian-based manager Carmel Size and her father, the legendary trainer Nevile Begg, bought Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt x Donna’s Appeal by Carnegie) for $280,000 from the 2014 Sydney Easter Sale draft of breeder Corumbene Stud.
He started his career with three wins in Sydney when trained by Les Bridge before he was transferred to Hong Kong. His record now stands at 10 wins and eight placings in 30 starts.
Bon Ho also races another outstanding son of Not A Single Doubt Classique Legend. Also trained in Sydney by Les Bridge, the untapped 3YO has won three of his first four starts including the G2 Arrowfield Stud Sprint at Randwick and is already locked into a slot for the $14 million Everest in October.
Ho and Size also signed for three more Arrowfield Stud-bred Not A Single Doubt yearlings at sales this year, securing colts from the mares Zillow and Lahana at Easter for $1.05 million and $480 and a Stormy Hussey colt for $140,000 at the Classic Sale in February.
Another Australian-bred product Blizzard (Starcraft x Stormy Choice by Redoute’s Choice) finished second in the Kranji MIle.
Bred by GSA Bloodstock he was purchased for $75,000 by Ricky Yiu from Arrowfield’s 2013 Melbourne Premier Sale draft.
The much traveled 7YO had four years racing in Hong Kong and Japan before his transfer last year to Lee Freedman in Singapore.
Blizzard has since added the Fortune Bowl LR and three placings to his record and his lifetime prizemoney now approaches $4 million.
Not A Single Doubt has sired 21 stakes winners this season, only five short of his career best total of 26 in 2016/17.
Other Australian-breds to win at Kranji included Zoustar colt Top Knight, bred by Elswick Stud, in the Singapore Guineas and Aramco (Magic Albert), a half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, in the Lion City Cup.
# In South Africa, the unbeaten Australian-bred Run Fox Run (Foxwedge) won the Listed Olympic Duel Stakes at Kenilworth, taking her record to four wins from four starts.
# Little Giant, a horse who could have been bought for $NZ55,000 when passed in as a yearling at the NZB Karaka Sale won Sunday’s G3 Sha Tin Vase (1200m) in Hong Kong.
The son of Swiss Ace and Princess Caroline has now had 12 starts for six wins and three placings, including a third in the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize and has earned more than $HK8.3 million prize-money for owners the Wizard Syndicate.
Little Giant began his career in New Zealand with Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta and raced twice for two wins before he went to David Hall in Hoing Kong.
