New Zealand Strike For Son Of Fastnet Rock

3 minute read

Fastnet Rock’s son Stryker sired his first NZ stakes winner when the G2 Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day was taken out by the Australian-bred Rangipo.

Rangipo could join an illustrious list of previous GN Guineas winners to go on to success at the top level, not the least being last year’s winner Mongolian Khan who went on to the G1 NZ Derby, G1 Australian Derby and G1 Caulfield Cup.

Rangipo (Stryker x Holloway Castle, by Zabeel) took his record to four wins from eight starts and with four of the last five winners of the Great Northern Guineas graduating to G1 success, trainer Tony Pike is confident that his quality galloper is capable of joining that list.

Rangipo is a member of the first Australian-bred crop by Stryker, a G3-winner and G1 placed son of Fastnet Rock who now boasts four stakes perfomers including the Listed winner Strykum.

Bred by Sledmere Stud and sold through the draft of Segenhoe Stud, Stryker was purchased by Ingham Racing for $600,000 and had the honour of being the first stakes winner trained by Chris Waller for the Ingham family in the Listed Heritage Stakes.

This week’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale features four lots by Stryker.

The G2 3yo mile was another biased on pace race due to the Ellerslie sludgy footing and the fact the run home saw about 50% of the track width total no go zones. Rangipo sat second the outer and surged clear the run home revelling in the tricky rain-affected footing to score by over a length and clocked a sedate 1:37.97. That time however did compare favourably with the easy G2 mile winner and later in the day and yet to be beaten Hasselhoof that clocked 1:36.77 (eight lengths superior). It was the fourth win in eight starts for the Australian bred Rangipo and since it has joined the Tony Pike yard has looked like a completely different horse. In six starts for the Pike yard the gelding has won four times and finished fourth the other two times plus he now looks like he will run middle distance. Get That Jive, another Australian bred, ran a game second after racing handy wide for much of the race and he clearly likes rain-affected footing. Dukedom after trailing on the inner made it a complete on pace trifecta and he is a tad underrated having been Listed placed at his prior outing. Fourth home was the leader Henree Winkler to make the first four a 100% on pacers and he fought on okay plus it was his first look clockwise. The first run on 3yo home was Gravano and he hit the line okay from the rear trio on settling considering the Ellerslie footing was too holding and gluggy to allow that happening very often all day. Sultan Of Swing boxed on okay from midfield on settling and What’s The Story also rallied from sitting midfield and wide. Brighton can be forgiven for his eighth was more meritorious than it can ever read. He was tardy them booted through the inner fifth or sixth midrace before staying closer in the run home and got anchored late in a rapidly deteriorating Ellerslie track. The hotpot Scrutinize copped a checked early and got back on the inner but was never ever travelling in the footing and was paddling closer in the run home. He is an explosive closer so needs firm and reliable footing not a shifty surface to detonate properly Golden Coin warmed up very late and will go close the next time out if put in a more suitable race and of course on a less biased circuit. The result was clearly flawed as too many were shackled by a sludgy and biased track but this will prove a worthy future wet track reference race.
