Savabeel Closing On His Century

3 minute read

New Zealand's champion sire Savabeel is edging closer to a century of stakeswinners after a pair of notable black type wins in Melbourne and Adelaide on Saturday

Savabeel boasts 91 stakeswinners after wins by classy stayer The Chosen One in the G2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield and his promising 3YO Craftmanship in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes at Morphettville.

They are among 620 winners from 880 runners for the Waikato Stud champion.

The Chosen One will now contest this week's 5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) and boasts a New Zealand pedigree befitting a winner of one of Australasia's great G1 races.

A descendant of the acclaimed O'Reilly mare The Jewel, The Chosen One was passed in at the 2017 NZB Karaka Premier Sale with a $150,000 reserve.

His breeders the Denis brothers retained shares of the ownership and have been rewarded as he has won five of his 14 starts and more than $NZ560,000 in stakes for trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

The Chosen One is the first named foal out of The Jewel's daughter The Glitzy One. By Flying Spur, she won eight races and was G3 placed in five black type races.

The Jewel, a dual G1 winner including the NZ 1000 Guineas as well as the G3 Doomben Roses in Brisbane, The Jewel has produced five winners from six foals to race including the five-time stakes winner The Diamond One (Tale of the Cat).

Her other foals The Glitzy One, The Precious One (Darci Brahma ) and The Bold One (Fastnet Rock) have all been stakes placed.

The Jewel is also a half-sister to Star Affair (Star Way), dam the G1 winner La Bella Diosa (So You Think), G3 winner Solid Billing (Rock of Gibraltar) and G1 placegetters Thy (O'Reilly) and Galileo's Galaxy (Galileo) while her brother The One was a G3 winer and G1 placed.

Craftmanship, a $360,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase in 2018 by DGR Thoroughbreds, stepped up to stakes class with a strong performance in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent.

Craftmanship, who has now won two of his four starts and $88,000, races in the colours of the late Dato Tan Chin Nam.

He is out of the stakes-winning mare Aspinal (Pins) and was bred by the Little Avondale Trust.

Aspinal, who won six races and was also G2 and G3 placed, is also the dam of the winner Mummentum (O'Reilly).

Aspinal's dam Clermont Rose (Sound Reason) was a multiple stakes placegetter. She is also the dam the G3 winner Grand Dancer (No Excuse Needed).

Clermont Rose is a half-sister to the stakes winner Iguazu (Carolingian), granddam of the multiple G1 winner and sire Sacred Falls (O'Reilly).

Waikato Stud enjoyed more success at Caulfield when the Ocean Park filly Tofane won the G3 Northwood Plume Stakes.

Tofane (Ocean Park x Baggy Green by Galileo) was bred by Gordon Cunningham, the founder and owner of Curraghmore Stud was sold privately by Ballymore Stables.

Cox Plate winner Ocean Park has sired 111 winners from 189 runners including four stakes winers led by his G1 Epsom Handicap winner Kolding.

Tofane is the first foal to race out of the Galileo winner Baggy Green, a three-quarter sister to G1 winner Funstar (Adelaide) and a half-sister to G1 winner Youngstar (High Chaparral).

Baggy Green is out of the champion filly User Friendly (Slip Anchor), the multiple G1 winner of the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks, St Leger and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

She is the dam of eight winners including G3 winner Downtown.

Having his third run this preparation after winning the Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick in April, The Chosen One staged a very good staying effort in winning here. He settled just beyond midfield in the 13-horse field before improving nicely from the 600m. He switched widest of all on straightening, went to fourth at the 200m and then finished too well to score a very good win. The British stayer Prince Of Arran ran a great race in his return to Australia. He began well and raced in fifth place before moving up well (deep) coming to the home turn. He took the lead at the 200m and then fought gamely under 58kg for second in a bold performance. Sully was handily placed in fourth spot before improving well nearing the home turn. He challenged on straightening and then battled very well for third. Wall Of Fire raced back in seventh place, improved from the 600m, was in a challenging position at the 300m and then held on well for fourth just in front of Hang Man who kept battling on nicely for fifth.
