Stud Prospects Rise For Snitzel Colt

3 minute read

In-form Snitzel colt Perast ended a topsy turvy day for prominent Sydney owners Frank and Christine Cook when he added a second successive stakes win at the Brisbane carnival to his record on Saturday.

Perast recorded an all-the-way success in the G3 Fred Best Classic at Doomben to go with his last start victory in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes.

The Cooks maroon, white and yellow silks featured in several finishes on Saturday including a strong wins by their impressive Deep Impact son Fierce Impact and Not A Single Doubt’s daughter Touch Of Mink at Randwick.

Their 3YO filly Another Dollar finished a close second in the G1 Queensland Oaks but things didn’t go quite as smoothly when their other Fred Best Classic runner Sambro was a late scratching after an incident in the barrier.

Fortunately Perast (Snitzel x Thousand Veils by Zabeel) ended the day on the right note when he led all the way to post his third stakes victory of the season.

The Cooks and their trainer Paul Perry now have to decide whether to press on to the G2 Queensland Guineas over 1600m on June 9 or make the most of Perast’s ballot-free status and run him in the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap on the same day.

"Three-year-olds have a great record in the Stradbroke and he is a stallion," said Shannon Perry said. "I suppose to win a Group One race is a high priority."

Now the winner of four races from 1100 to 1400m and almost $400,000, Perast was bred by Jonathan Munz’s GSA Bloodstock and was bought by Paul Perry for $100,000 from the Maluka Thoroughbreds draft at the 2016 Melbourne Premier Sale.

He is the best of four winners out of Zabeel’s South Australian St Leger-winning daughter Thousand Veils and the third stakeswinner bred on the Snitzel/Zabeel cross after Time For War and Lubiton.

Thousand Veils died in January, leaving behind her sixth and final foal, a colt by Smart Missile.

Perast is one of Snitzel’s 26 individual Australian stakeswinners this season – one short of a new outright record – and his Fred Best Classic success takes Snitzel’s tally for 2017/18 to 43 Group and Listed wins.

Zoustar has sired seven first crop winners including three at G2 level while Spirit Of Boom is the sire of 16 winners and four at stakes level.

Paul Perry-trained colt Perast followed his smart win in Listed class at his fourth run this preparation over this distance at this track on 12 May with another very good all-the-way win here. He went to the front but was pressured in the lead (by Whypeeo). He beat off that runner and grabbed at break at the 300m and then did well in holding on to score by a half-length. Assimilate raced back in eighth place, on the rails, improved (between runners) on straightening and came with a late run to take second. Mishani Bullitt raced in seventh pace, went to the centre of the track on turning for home and kept running on for third from Marsupial who had been handily placed (but deep) before holding on for (3.5 lengths) fourth.
