Sweet Guineas Win For Arrowfield Stud

3 minute read

Group One victories don't come much sweeter for Arrowfield Stud than the thrilling win by Super Seth in Saturday's $2 million Caulfield Guineas.

The Anthony Freedman-trained colt represents Arrowfield's past and present, being by the stud's current boom stallion Dundeel out of a daughter of its greatest resident Redoute's Choice.

Super Seth (Dundeel x Salutations by Redoute's Choice) himself became a valuable stud asset when he became the fourth G1 winner in Dundeel's first two crops of racing age, joining his other elite level winners Yourdeel, Castelvecchio and Atyaab from just 110 runners.

Bred by Arrowfield with John Leaver's Planette Thoroughbreds, Super Seth was a $280,000 purchase by agent Dean Hawthorne for Jonathan Munz's Pinecliff Racing at the 2018 Easter Sale in Sydney.

Groundswell, Super Seth's stablemate and fellow 2018 Easter graduate from the Arrowfield draft, finished third in the Guineas.

Also purchased by Munz, Groundswell, by Fastenet Rock from the Hussonet mare Broken Shore, made the top price of $2.3 million at the sale with co-breeder Arrowfield retaining a share of the colt.

Super Seth joins other G1 winners Atyaab, Secret Agenda, Master Of Design and Fashions Afield bred by Arrowfield in partnership with John Leaver. Super Seth is also the third consecutive Arrowfield-sired winner of the Caulfield Guineas after The Autumn Sun (Redoute's Choice) and Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt).

The Dundeel-Redoute's Choice cross is becoming a hot mix in Australian racing with nine winners among the 12 horses to race bred on the cross.

Super Seth's dam Salutations is also the producer of two other winners including the dual stakeswinner Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom).

A daughter of the G2 winner Toast Of The Coast (Rory's Jester), Salutations foaled a full brother to Super Seth earlier this month and has gone back to Dundeel, the six-time G1 winner by High Chaparral.

Dundeel now heads the Australian 3YO sires' list and on Saturday jumped 28 places to third on the Australian General Sires' premiership with $2.6 million earnings in less than three months of the current season from only 52 runners, the smallest number by any stallion in the top 15.

More significant is Saturday's results saw the late Redoute's Choice regain the lead on the Australian broodmare sires' table with just over $6 million prizemoney ahead of Encosta de Lago, More Than Ready, Danehill and Flying Spur.

Redoute's Choice won the broodmare title for the first time last season and added to his record in this category at Caulfield on Saturday when he also appeared as the dam sire of the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Flit (Medaglia d'Oro x Glissade by Redoute's Choice) and the G2 Schillaci Stakes winner Trekking (Street Cry x Outdoor by Redoute's Choice).

Trekking will now run in the Melbourne Racing Club's slot in next Saturday's $14 million Everest at Randwick where Redoute's Choice is also represented as a dam sire by the outstanding mare Arcadia Queen (Pierro).

Super Seth, Flit, Arcadia Queen and Trekking are among 96 stakeswinners including 16 G1 winners left by Redoute's Choice mares.

Saturday also saw two other stars by Dundeel make their mark at Randwick.

His exciting Tasmanian-trained 3YO The Inevitable (Dundeel x Gift Bouquet by King's High) booked his spot in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle with his success in the Silver Eagle while G1 winner Castelvecchio (Dundeel x St Therese by Dehere) put in a strong trial for the WS Cox Plate when he finished hard for second to Shadow Hero in the ATC Spring Champion Stakes, a race won by his sire.

The Inevitable, bred by Tori Park Stud, was secured for $90,000 by David Brunton from the Cornerstone Stud draft at the Magic Millions Adelaide Sale in 2018.

He has no won eight races from 10 starts and almost $700,000 prizemoney.

Talented Anthony Freedman-trained colt Super Seth took his record to four wins from seven starts in taking out this Group 1 feature. He settled in quite a good place about eighth, between runners from an improved barrier (4) before Mark Zahra got him into clear running nearing the home turn, where he was conceding the leader about six lengths. He then came with a strong late run to grab a narrow but very good win. Alligator Blood tracked the free-running leader (Roccabascerana), went to the front on turning for home, held a clear advantage at the 200m, only to be caught on the post for (nose) second. Groundswell was smartly away and settled in third place on the rails. He was under riding at the home turn but kept fighting on gamely for third in a promising effort at only his fourth start. Subedar raced back in 13th place and did well in running on nicely over the closing stages for (3.2 lengths) fourth. The favourite Dalasan went forward from his outside barrier (16) and settled back in third place (without cover), tracking a solid tempo. He was under pressure at the home turn and then held on for (3.7 lengths) fifth in a sound effort.
