Classic Contenders For Coolmore Sires

3 minute read

While Coolmore Australia climbed to new heights at Randwick on Saturday with Everest winner Yes Yes Yes the Caulfield Cup program also provided some notable highlights with outstanding classic trials from progeny by Pierro and So You Think.

Coolmore-based Pierro continued his fine season when his 3YO filly Gamay produced a super VRC Oaks trial with a strong win in the G3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) while So You Think has a top contender for the Victoria Derby after the lightly raced Thought Of That ran away with the G3 Caulfield Classic (2000m)

Pierro is becoming quite a sire of top shelf classic three-year-olds, the son of Lonhro already responsible for the Derby, Oaks and Guineas winners Levendi (ATC Derby); Pinot (VRC Oaks), Arcadia Queen (WA Guineas); Furore (Hong Kong Derby), Action (WA Derby) and Regal Power (WA Derby).

His current 3YO crop also includes the last start G1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Shadow Hero, favourite for the Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 2.

Pierro's oldest progeny are now 5YOs and include five stakes winners this season among his total of 19 Group and Listed winners.

The Archie Alexander-trained Gamay (Pierro x Amish by Canny Lad) is on track to emulate Pinot as she also won the Ethereal Stakes before Oaks success at Flemington.

Racing in the Coolmore colours, Gamay was purchased by BBA Ireland in partnership with Alexander Racing out of the NZB Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 at Karaka for $NZ110,000 where she was offered by Highview Stud.

She has now raced five times for two wins and two seconds and prizemoney of 157,500.

The result was an apt one for race sponsor New Zealand Bloodstock with four of its National Yearling Sale graduates in the race with Gamay and Vegas Jewel (Shocking) filling the quinella.

Gamay is the eighth winner from eight foals to race out of Amish, a half-sister to prolific G2 winner Pinwheel (Lonhro).

Amish's other progeny include the stakes-winner Meidung (Bernardini), dam of the G2 winner Banish (Lonhro).

High Chaparral's champion son So You Think was also provided with a new stakes winner at Caulfield when the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Thought Of That dominated the Caulfield Classic.

Purchased by Forest Lodge Racing for $100,000 at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale from Tarcoola Stud, Thought Of That  (So You Think x Hold Me Closer by Danehill Dancer) has now won two of his seven starts for $238,400 prize-money. He is the 21st stakes winner by 10-time G1 winner So You Think.

Bred by Ken Williams' Tarcoola Stud, he is raced by Brae Sokolski and partners and races in the same colours as Everest winner Yes Yes Yes.

Thought Of That is the first foal out of Hold Me Closer, a winning daughter of the Sir Tristram mare Intertwined who has also produced the Listed winner How Funny (Rory's Jester), runner-up in the 2003 G1 Golden Slipper.

Williams bred Hold Me Closer after he purchased her dam Intertwined in 2001 for $62,500.

How Funny is the dam of Listed winner Jester's Girl (Commands) who in turn produced Listed winner and multiple Group placed Assimilate (Sebring).

Thought Of That's third dam is the G2 winner Twining (Twig Moss).

Gamay came into calculations for the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) with a solid performance in winning The Archie Alexander-trained filly here. She worked a bit in the early stages before settling in fifth place, one off the rails. She moved up nicely rounding the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then fought best to win well. Vegas Jewel settled just beyond midfield, moved up (very deep) rounding the home turn, challenged on passing the 200m and then fought really well for second, her first defeat in three starts. Celestial Falls was trapped wide from her difficult barrier (10) before going to the front at the 1200m. She challenged coming to the home turn and then showed courage in holding on well for third. Ocean Miss was wide early on before settling in third place. She moved up nearing the home turn, took a narrow lead at the 200m and then did well in fighting on for (3.4 lengths) fourth, staging a sound effort at only her third start.
