First-up pattern points to Mosaic

A resuming speedster with a lethal first-up record and an in-form Group-winning mare will give the Ryan and Alexiou stable a strong hand in the Starlight Stakes at Rosehill.

The training partners will saddle up Mr Mosaic and Sky Command in Saturday's 1100m Listed sprint and Gerald Ryan can make a case for both.

Mr Mosaic has four wins from five first-up runs, his only fresh defeat coming last preparation when he was narrowly edged out by Vulpine in a photo finish.

The six-year-old has not been given an official barrier trial but Ryan says he is well conditioned for his return.

"He had three jump outs and he appears to be going well," Ryan said.

"He is fit enough to win first-up if he's good enough."

Mr Mosaic hasn't raced since finishing down the track in Listed company at Doomben in June and Ryan reported the horse emerged from that race with an issue.

The stable has taken its time to get the horse right and are happy he is ready to fire on Saturday.

"After he went to Doomben, he scoped no good the next day," Ryan said.

"He had a spell in Queensland, came back here and did a couple of weeks work and then we turned him out again because I didn't think he was over his little virus from up there.

"But he has come back well now."

Sky Command has been racing in great heart, placing in the Toy Show Quality (1100m) first-up in August and claiming the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) two starts ago.

While three of her wins have been on heavy tracks, she has also raced well on firmer ground, although when pressed to split his pair, Ryan slightly favours Mr Mosaic on the dry conditions.

"Given a dry track, I'd probably have a leaning towards Mr Mosaic, given a wet track I'd have a leaning to Sky Command," he said.

Ryan is also keen on the chances of Steely from an inside draw in the Listed Elite Sand And Soil Cup (2000m) as he looks to back-up from a luckless second to Nugget at Kembla Grange last weekend when he tracked wide.

"He is going to a mile-and-a-quarter for the first time and dropping down to 53kg, but if he can back-up he will run very well," Ryan said.
