Anapurna wins Epsom Oaks 2019

3 minute read

Given a top ride by Frankie Dettori, the John Gosden trained Anapurna won a tough battle with Pink Dogwood to win the fillies’ crown.

Anapurna had won the trial for this but was overlooked in the market in favour of her stablemate Mehdaayih, who had been supplemented for this.  Unfortunately for Mehdaayih and her veteran jockey Robert Halvin they encountered traffic problems and it was not to be.  Fleeting 25/1 came with a great finish to pick up the third money ahead of Manuela de Vega 16/1.

The Coronation Cup went to Defoe for the in form combo of Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni.    Defoe had started at 11/1 and wasn’t all that promising in the early stages but in the straight a gap opened and Defoe responded to Atzeni’s urging and went through it and then powered ahead to battle out the finish with Kew Gardens, gaining the win in the last few yards.  Saluoen and Communique who had been prominent finished in third and fourth and a respectable run from Marmelo for fifth.
