Top Tassie filly Mystic Journey will target the Australian Guineas after a dominant win in today’s Listed Magic Millions Thomas Lyons Stakes at Elwick.
Prepared by Adam Trinder and already a Group 2 winner in the spring, the filly took on the older horses in today’s weight for age feature in Hobart and gave them a start and a beating.
Turning at the tail, jockey Anthony Darmanin angled to the outside rail and surged clear for a dominant win over main rival Hellova Street. Chamois Road held third.
“She was fantastic. He only gave her one encouraging stripe behind the saddle getting to the line and she already had the race under control by then,” Trinder said. “Every time she runs she runs better than the previous time.”
The filly , an $11,000 Magic Millions purchase, has won eight of 11 runs including the Group 2 Aquis Farm Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley last spring.
She will now return to Victoria for the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in three weeks time.
‘Three weeks between runs is perfect for her and out to the mile,” Trinder said. Each run she settles a little bit more early and she’s really going to appreciate Flemington at the mile with the nice long straight.”
“She will take improvement out of today’s race and be spot on for the Guineas.”
Winning rider Darmanin, who has been aboard throughout her career, agrees the filly is now looking for the mile.
“I thought she’d be more brilliant over the 1400m but she was chasing a long way out and i had to go around the entire field,” Darmanin said. “I think the mile will be perfect for her now.”
While Trinder said he will go easy on the filly in the next few weeks as she heads towards the Guineas, TasRacing will be going hard to encourage Tasmanians to vote for both Mystic Journey and runner up Hellova Street in the All Star Mile at Flemington two weeks after the Guineas.
The $5 million All Star Mile, with the majority of the field made up by public voting, sees Mystic Journey currently ranked 15th and Hellova Street ranked 19th with the star filly well fancied to take her place in the race.
