Tasmania’s leading trainer Scott Brunton is confident he has another rising star ready to take on Melbourne company after Mandela Effect added to his growing reputation with a decisive win in Launceston on Sunday.

Mandela Effect, a lightly raced 4YO by Turffontein who cost Brunton only $18,000, was a class above his rivals in the $65,000 Tasbreeders Magic Millions Classic for three and four-year-olds, extending his record to seven wins with four placings from only 12 starts.

The Brunton stable, now under Scott’s control following the retirement of his father David from training, has an excellent strike rate with horses they have sent across Bass Strait to take on Melbourne’s best.

Their noted winners include the top class mares Lady Lynette, Hellova Street and the last start Flemington winner The Inevitable.

Brunton says Mandela Effect is in their class, describing the 4YO as potentially his best horse.

“He’s an exciting horse, he could be the best I’ve had,” said Brunton.

“He will head to Melbourne – there’s a benchmark race coming up where he will get some weight relief and we will go from there.”

Senior jockey Jason Maskiell landed the Magic Millions double at the Mowbray meeting when he gave Mandela Effect a confident ride to loop the field four wide from the 800m to challenge for the lead.

He then took control and did enough under 59kg to beat Bosporus and Tale Of The Fox.

Maskiell also won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the hot favourite Deroche.
