Marcus Tregoning reported Mohaather in fine fettle the morning after his impressive display in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

Having rounded off his juvenile campaign with a surprise success in the Horris Hill Stakes at the Berkshire venue, the Showcasing colt confirmed there was absolutely no fluke about that victory with an authoritative display on his seasonal reappearance.

Mohaather is a general 16-1 shot for the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmaket next month, with John Gosden’s Too Darn Hot – who missed an intended appearance in the Greenham after suffering a setback – the short-priced favourite at 7-4.

Tregoning said: “He’s absolutely fine this morning and we’re very happy with him.

“It was a really good day. He did what we hoped he would do, which is always nice.”

Looking ahead to a potential clash with Too Darn Hot on the Rowley Mile, the trainer added: “Whether he turns up in the Guineas or not, there has to be a question mark. It could be a wide open race or it might not be.

“We are very happy with our horse – he looks progressive – and I think he probably will run in the Guineas, but we’ve still got three weeks to go.”

If Mohaather does line up in the 2000 Guineas, it will be his first start over a mile – and questions about his stamina will be asked.

Tregoning said: “I think he’ll give himself a chance to stay the mile as he settles so well. Hopefully, off a strong pace, he’ll be fine.

“He does have a lot of speed, but you’ve got to have speed to win a Guineas.”

It is 13 years since Tregoning saddled Sir Percy to win the Epsom Derby and after a few lean years, he is delighted to finally get his hands on another potential star.

He added: “Every trainer, owner and jockey wants a good horse as it just highlights the operation.

“We’re certainly looking forward to the rest of the year with this horse.”
