Racing Preview : Canberra - Wednesday, 3rd July 2019

3 minute read

Competitive fields all day and the $40,000 Federal has again attracted a competitive line-up. Out wide was the place to be at the last meeting, and no surprise if the club has that rectified. Nick Olive backs-up two dominant winners from the last meeting: Successful Day in Race 3 and Contaminated in Race 4, and their performances will create plenty of interest.

Race 1

Imanacheeva may be the one to lead and a few others will race handy. OPPOSITE (9) and OLD TRAFFORD (4) fought out the finish at the last meeting with the latter getting the upper hand. OPPOSITE (9) gets the weight swing today and can reverse the order. He made a ratings spike in that and is ready to match his Victorian best. OLD TRAFFORD (4) will carry the full 59kg, but keeps improving, and as with Opposite, won't be bothered by the extra trip. He'll sure to be hitting the line hard. CONFIDENT LAD (5) draws to advantage and is better then the form-line reads. A repeat of his recent Goulburn efforts would have him in the finish. IMANACHEEVA (2) mucked the start in the Old Trafford/Opposite race and had to work to sit on-speed. He may control this with the 4kg claim and can stick on a lot better. BET:  Opposite gets another chance.

Race 2

Tiz War Brow runs along and can lead. ROCKETING TO WIN (5) made good improvement at Newcastle settling on-speed after a slow off. That reads very well for this and he peaks today off a low draw. ENRAGED (1) was heavily backed missing a nose on resumption and ran favourite again at Goulburn disappointing but pulling up with an issue. He's back after 19 days drawn the rail and expect a bounce. FEVER TREE (3) is a debutant who has trialled well for Team Joseph. The early market suggests she has plenty of ability. VULPES (6) is sure to be better for the first-up run at Newcastle and needs to be kept safe. ALLIED INVASION (2) resumes for the Widdup yard and is a market watch. BET: Rocketing To Win has the figures to win this for Team Snowden.

Race 3

Withorn draws a low gate today and looks a likely leader. SUCCESSFUL DAY (3) won on debut at the last meeting and did it by a space. She was heavily-backed off a good open trial and can go right on with it for the leading yard. WE COULD BE HEROES (2) should use the rail and peaks today off the two strong placings this venue. Keeps the small claim and is sure to be in the thick of the action again. JELLIES (8) is also third-up and placed just behind the above at the last meeting. She is knocking on the door and will be coming home hard again.  ABRADED (4) won the Bathurst Maiden as expected and will be around the mark. WITHORN (6) should get to the speed more comfortably today and go on the big Maiden win here two runs back. BET: Successful Day is promising and can go on.

Race 4

Contaminated will work over and lead again. CONTAMINATED (1) has won his last two comfortably from the front and ran them off their legs here the latest. He just has to hold those peaks to make the hat-trick. Stablemate PALAMEDES (8) is an improver who hit the line well here 12 days ago behind Contaminated. He's a chance on that. GOLD TOUCH (4) won comfortably at Wagga as the market expected, and then wasn't too far away at Rosehill after when unfancied. Gets a 3kg claim in a more suitable assignment, but needs to see out the extra trip. GENTLE ANNIE (3) made sharp improvement placing up in trip last time and can build on that. PINCH PASSION (2) has been knocking on the door at the mile and forget the Rosehill effort when she was luckless at long odds. She's some hope with the advantageous draw. TYRES ARE CRUCIAL (5) resumed on a bog and best to forgive. He goes well second-up and is better suited this trip. BET: Hard to go past Contaminated.

Race 5

Secret Work gets the opportunity to lead and Flight Commander will be handy. SECRET WORK (5) found Successful Day much too good here last time but was on the inside and that disadvantaged. She did a good job in the circumstances and peaking will get every chance using the rail. DRIFTER (13) is a well-bred Sydney-trained gelding resuming off a strong Warwick Farm trial. He's shown enough to suggest this is winnable. MR ALOYSIUS (2) is a Nick Olive debutant drawn low. She was just nudged out in a recent Goulburn trial and the early market suggests she has plenty of ability. FLIGHT COMMANDER (1) is a stablemate resuming after 467 days and has trialled well. He has ability and has also had early support. BET: With Secret Work, but with a close eye on the market.

Race 6

Trapper Tom looks the leader. BONITAS (3) was back and wide and flew when just missing at the last meeting. He can sit handier today from the rail and gets his chance. KATATONIC (6) also impressed close up in the same race with the winkers applied first time. Draws handy and deserves a win. BULLET MASTER (4) had trialled well and will be better for the debut run on the Kensington slow. He will have to have the last go at them and represents a leading Sydney yard. TRAPPER TOM (14) led here in the Bonitas race, and was given no respite the middle stages. They only got to him late, and he's a player with a more measured ride. BET: A good contest, but Bonitas appeals most.

Race 7

Manzana can lead from Prince Jacko and Territorial. Another very competitive $40,000 Federal with a number of genuine chances. YOUSAY BOLT (8) looked in need of it resuming at Flemington and then improved to just miss at Albury as favourite. Peaks now up to a favourite trip and the promising mare should go close. FARTHING WOOD (11) has unwound big finishes to win both is runs back this venue. This is tougher again but her figures stack right up and she may sit handier today finally drawing a decent gate. PRINCE JACKO (6) put in a tough effort when wide all the way here at the last meeting. He draws handier and is right in it. ONS VIER (4) didn't have the best of it in the Federal 26 days ago as favourite when beaten 1.5L behind Prince Jacko. A winning effort wouldn't surprise. BET: Going with Yousay Bolt - the new kid on the block.

Race 8

Ruby Red Heart, Sky Mission and Tycoon Lily might be the quickest early in a race with speed across the barriers. A very competitive race. It was hard not to be impressed by CLASSIC CONQUEST'S (7) the first-up win of at this track 12 days ago. She sat back after a bump at the start and was much too good powering down the outside. She's back improved and is likely to sit handier today from the better gate. Gets the claim and a repeat is on the cards. TYCOON TILY (11) posted a strong figure two back and then got caught wide after. She's fast and should be suited around this circuit. Stablemate TICKED OFF (12) was wide throughout in the Classic Conquest race beaten 1.9L. She gets the 3kg claim today and can get closer. SKY MISSION (2) was on-speed four or five wide in the same race and it was a huge effort to make the quinella. The 4kg claimer is likely to ride him more judicially today and that gives him a decent chance. NOBODY'S PUPPET (5) ran favourite at Albury following the Randwick run and disappointed. She draws low and quick improvement wouldn't surprise with the winkers on again. Nick Olive stablemate LUGA LAD (3) resumes and watch the market closely with him and elevate if the money comes. BET: Open, but leaning to Classic Conquest.
