Spend, a $1,550,000 purchase at the Sydney Inglis Easter Yearling Sales, showed his potential with a narrow but promising win here on debut. He settled back in fifth place, one off the rails, before improving at the 600m. He was under riding on straightening, responded and took the lead at the 100m, looking set for a clear victory, before battling back to score narrowly. He should be improved by the inexperience and looks a colt with a good future. The Chris Waller-trained colt True Detective travelled well in third place for Hugh Bowman, took the lead at the 200m, was overtaken at the 100m and then fought back for (short head) second. Belitsa raced in fourth place on the rails, was under pressure on straightening but kept battling on over the latter stages to take third in a photo.
