Best From The West: Belmont – 14th September 2019

3 minute read

The Listed Farnley Stakes is the feature on the Belmont card this week.

We'll look at that race later but earlier you just have to like the way Too Close The Sun has come back to racing.

It is no surprise on his breeding that he needed ground and sitting up on the speed would also benefit him.

His wins have not come in overly strong races but it was the manner of an improving horse.

He steps up again to Rating 64+ company on a Saturday but now gets William Pike so must have impressed him.

Even back 100m, that should not hurt his chances.

So to that Farnley Stakes and it's a decent sized field for all ages.

Barriers could well be an important factor here. Some of the favoured runners are wide and so will either work to get in or go back.

We can speck Tamasa here as he's ready to peak third up since arriving from Victoria.

This time last year he was winning well which is no mean feat during the Spring carnival.

Since coming to Perth he's been closing off well but the gate hurt his hopes last time.

This time he can position up closer, racing on the limit and the stable is having a great trot. We can back him each way.

Neurological was a surprise $18 winner, his first at stakes level but his ninth win in 20 starts. He made an early move to settle outside the leader (Just Act Natural), challenged at the home turn and then kept fighting back well to score a narrow but good win. Abdicator settled back in the field, tracked up (wide with cover) nearing the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then battled well for second, beaten a head. Disposition raced back in ninth place, improved between runners on straightening and kept running on to take third, while the favourite Tellem We're Comin went back from a wide barrier and then came from last at the home turn for (2 lengths) fourth.
