Mewstone Rock to write history in Just Now

3 minute read

Caloundra eight-year-old Mewstone Rock can become the oldest mare to win a black-type race in Brisbane in the Just Now Quality.

Eight-year-old Mewstone Rock can write herself into the history books as the oldest mare to win a black-type race in Brisbane if she can claim the Listed Just Now Quality at Doomben.

The Just Now is one of a series of black-type races for fillies and mares in Brisbane during the summer.

The race is named after top Queensland mare Just Now who won the Australian Oaks at Randwick.

The 1350m-race has again drawn an even field of mares at Doomben on Saturday.

Mewstone Rock is by champion sire Fastnet Rock and on her dam's side is closely related to Group One winner Lucia Valentina.

She did not have her first start until 2015 and was one of several horses trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon brought with them from Victoria when they moved to Queensland.

The mare has won five races in Queensland including her first in metropolitan class at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

"She will be going to the National Broodmare Sale next year and we obviously want to get black-type for her," Symons said.

"She deserves her chance in this class."

Mewstone Rock's chances improved when Sydney trained Gary Portelli scratched likely favourite Improvement because of her wide barrier and big weight.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
