Assaranca looms as Ladbrokes Devonport Cup prospect

3 minute read

Trainer Barry Campbell confirmed his plan to take his talented four-year-old Assaranca to the Ladbrokes Devonport Cup following another impressive win by the four-year-old in Launceston last Wednesday night.

It was Assaranca's third win in succession but clearly her most impressive, so she will now head back to her home track in Devonport for a tilt at one of the two main lead-up races to next year's Devonport Cup.

Two starts back the mare had to show her fighting qualities and dig deep when challenged over the final 200 metres of a benchmark 68 handicap over 1600m but this time over the same trip and against similar opposition she came from behind to win impressively.

"The mare is improving all the time and I have no doubt she will be better over more ground," Barry Campbell said.

"I reckon she'd have to win either of those lead-up races to get into the Cup, but we'll keep going and see how we go."

The Golden Mile and Sheffield Cups offer the winners ballot free entry into the Devonport Cup, so winning either of those evens over 1650m removes the reliance on having a high enough rating to secure a start in the $100,000 event over 1880m on 5 January.

"I think we could get her into a Devonport Cup on the minimum weight, so we'll aim her at a Golden Mile or a Sheffield Cup and see how we go.
