Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays for Australian TAB meetings on September 5.
Five TAB meetings are held across Australia on this Thursday at Ballina, Newcastle, Seymour, Townsville & Northam.
Newcastle: Race 6 @ 4:40pm
Quissent and Swordsman to provide a strong early pace. SENDING LOVE (6) was well in commission on debut last start over 1000m at Taree, closing hard only to miss by the barest margin after being tightened for room halfway down the straight. Better placed over this longer trip today and looks poised to go one better. CONFINEMENT (7) is a debutante to watch carefully from the Mark Newnham stable. By Star Witness from an Encosta De Lago mare with five winners from her six foals to race. Trialling well and is ready to run a big race with the advantage of an inside gate. HEAD SPINS (1) is a recent trail winner on this circuit and also poses a threat on debut. FIGHT FOR LOVE (2) has showed some ability in two runs to date in better company. Worth considering first up from a spell in this easier race. SELECTIONS: #6 Sending Love has been the subject of good support on race morning and looks very hard to stop.

Ballina: Race 3 @ 2:35pm
Magic Scent the likely leader with the scratchings taking most of the pace out of this race. HARD MERCHANDISE (2) returned from an 13-month spell with an impressive 2nd over this trip at Wyong last start, chasing hard but finding one better. Will derive great benefit from that run and back to a country Class 2 is ideally placed to score. SO SHY (3) is worth consideration first up from a 110-day break. Not a noted first up performer but has generally mixed it in better company than this. Capable of a big run out of an inside gate. MECUM (5) scored first up over this trip at Casino then struggled in a 1200m Class 2 at Lismore last time. Worth another chance back to five furlongs. MAGIC SCENT (10) goes fast and has a good record at today's journey. Might take some running down. SELECTIONS: #2 Hard Merchandise to go one better today.
Seymour: Race 9 @ 4:30pm
There’s potential leaders across the barriers and the tempo should be solid. BOOMSTOCK (1) raced in Group company at the back of the first campaign and should be ready for the middle distance after two runs back. Wasn’t far away as favourite the latest, and Oliver’s the hoop you want to be with when the whips are cracking. CLEO'S POET (6) will get to the speed okay and impressed leading and winning the 58 at Mornington by a space as favourite. Expect him to be in the finish again. LEMON SPLICE (3) won the 66 by 5.8L at Albury improving again. The 4kg claim brings him into it. SKYFIRE (10) is knocking on the door and is in the mix at odds.SELECTIONS: Boomstock gets Oliver and looks well-placed.
Northam: Race 7 @ 6:50pm
Sir Mambo and Moet De Vega can run them along. SIR MAMBO (2) has placed the last three and finds a bit easier. He was heavily-backed at Belmont the latest with Pike up, and he sticks. This is his chance. MOET DE VEGA (1) had good support resuming in stronger in town, but slipped at the start. He’s sharp second-up and has plenty up the sleeve. He needs to be kept very safe with the handy 3kg claim. BON VOYAGE (4) peaks and is knocking on the door. He can make the finish at odds. PEARL GIRL (6) is ready to win and had no luck last time. Draws low and gets a claim. SELECTIONS: Sticking with #2 Sir Mambo to top the favourite. #5 Flying Target in the previous also appeals.
