Pakenham Pearlers: Pakenham – 7th December 2019

3 minute read

Once more we stray from the metro area for another Saturday race meeting and this time it’s the Pakenham Cup card.

The David Bourke Memorial features a few horses who are early in their campaigns and it is the right race for More Than Exceed to strike while hard fit.

He has been freshened up after running in a race a bit too hard during Cup week and he never came into that race up the straight.

But the More Than Ready gelding gets to race on his home track and his previous form in Adelaide was excellent, winning multiple times.

He'll sit much further forward in this event than he did at Flemington and prove a tough nut to crack.

Let's have a swing at the Cup for our value play and Chapada has been asked to bite off a lot more than he could chew in his career, running in multiples classics and running well in many of them too.

He gets to drop back from a solid WFA test in the Zipping Classic when not far from a very decent European winner at the end.

Now fifth up he's peaking out to the 2500m and his best sees him well set up with 55.5kg.

Plenty of these have had long Spring campaigns but he's ready to fire now and we can back him both totes.

Etah James made it win seven (second stakes) by outstaying her opponents here. She was handy from the start, third with a circuit to run then into second rounding out of the home straight, holding that spot to the 1200m before pressuring the leader inside the 1000m. Shadowing the leader around the corner and into the home straight she grabbed the lead at the 400m. She led by more than a length at the 200m then extended the lead soon after and simply stayed on too well, up by a length and a half at the wire. Secret Blaze sat second last at the 1200m, improved quickly rounding into the home straight and threaded between runners the length of the straight but too late. Midterm was fifth at the 800m, fourth and wide turning in and then ran on quite well for third from Valac, who having been second at the 300m faded to fourth, with the first three well clear.
