John Thompson-trained colt Purple Sector followed his good third in the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on April 20 with a smart win here, his first at stakes level.

After a good beginning and leading early from his inside barrier (1), he was given a nice trip by Blake Shinn in third place. He moved up well at the home turn, took the lead coming to the 200m and then drew away to win comfortably.

Tony Gollan-trained A Man To Match raced in seventh place, improved nicely (between runners) coming to the home turn, went to third on straightening and then fought on well for second.

The favourite Dealmaker settled back in fifth place (with cover) before James McDonald made an early move due to the slackening tempo at the 800m to race outside the leader (The Golden Hind). He went to the front entering the straight but then just battled on for third, looking somewhat disappointing over the latter stages.
