Diamond Thunder made it a race-to-race stakes success for the Mark Newnham stable and jockey Blake Shinn in winning here. He settled in second last place from his wide barrier in the ten-horse field, tracking a quick tempo. He improved between runners rounding the home turn and then came with a strong late bid to win well. The favourite California Zimbol was a bit slow to move, settled in seventh place, moved up (wide out) coming to the home turn, raced a bit greenly in the straight before taking the lead at the 100m. But she could not then hold off the late-closing winner to finish (half-length) second in a sound effort at only her third start. Niedorp raced outside the leader and stablemate (Perudo) at a good pace. She briefly got to the front at the 200m and then battled well for third after her early efforts.
