Ssangyong Counties Cup, Group 3 : Pukekohe Park - 23rd November 2019

3 minute read

In A Twinkling wins Ssangyong Counties Cup, Group 3 NZ$100,000 at Pukekohe Park, 2100m.

Second in the NZ Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) last March, In A Twinkling made it back-to-back wins (his career third), leading almost throughout here after a cagey Opie Bosson ride.

One of several that jumped away quickly he took over with just under a circuit to run, led by a length down the back, slowing the pace a shade at the 800m.

Bosson sat quietly into the straight then shot him two lengths clear at the 200m and the damage was done, still out by a length and a quarter at the line.

Cutadeel was midfield at the 1000m, moved closer turning in and kept up a solid run in the middle of the track without looking to catch the winner to dead-head for second with Strolling Vagabond  who sat fourth last at the 1000m, was in heavy traffic turning in, got out at the 300m and finished strongly to nab the dead-heat.

Favourite Concert Hall also finished well the last 200m from back in the field to run fourth.

Ssangyong Counties Cup (G3)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This G3 Open Handicap over 2100m saw an all the way winner in the Australian bred In A Twinkling carrying 57kg and the 4yo kicked clear at the 300m and never looked like being caught. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (two-off the inside and half a length in front), fifth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (two-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), led (on the fence and a neck in front), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader) and tenth (five-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). The track presented was greatly biased towards on pacers as just one runner all day came from off the pace and that was in the last race as the winner came from tenth turning for home and four lengths from the leader. The other eight races saw six of them come from first, second or third turning for home and two came from fifth but no worse than two and a half lengths from the leader. The times all day were okay but nothing exceptional on a supposed Good3, which just adds to the bane of betting that is manmade track bias. In A Twinkling was a close second in the G1 NZ Derby (2400m) last season and had taken a while to come up as a 4yo but prior to today won a Benchmark 82 over 2100m under 61kg so he had regained that winning feeling. Today was just his third win from seventeen starts so his conversion rate is poor but he does seem to lift for the worthwhile events and ran the favourite in this event too. A deadheat for second ensued behind In A Twinkling between the also Australian bred Cutadeel and Strolling Vagabond. Cutadeel was handy the outer a lap out then lost his spot to be eighth between runners midrace before improving through fifth turning for home. The also 4yo that ran tenth in the Derby last season reached second at the 350m and was thereafter chasing the winner in vain then had to share runners up honours on the line. Strolling Vagabond since coming to a new stable has shown vast improvement and the 7yo mare got back eleventh surrounded and was tenth turning in but ran home strongly and shared second on the line. She had missed in five Blacktype events for her previous yard but since coming to new surroundings now has a Listed and G2 placing on her resume. Concert Hall was second favourite and ran on very strongly from back and wide on settling to be beaten just over two and a half lengths. Roger That under 58kg raced third then fifth between runners and moved up third again turning for home then battled away okay. His form this season has been very solid and would end in a G1 3200m win at $40 with 55kg on March 7 at Ellerslie. Blue Breeze under 59kg ran his best race in ages when sixth as he had been beaten by daylight in two Sydney starts at Listed and G3 level. He would revert to that poor form again after today and run last or near last in three more runs showing he never really came up at all this season. Fiscal Fantasy ran on okay once in clear air after being badly held up at the 200m. Vin De Dance the topweight sat second the outer and weakened and he has not come up at all this season it does appear. Cossack Warrior was lame in the left foreleg post race and then tenth backwards were beaten almost eight lengths and as far as over twenty-two lengths. The first two home were 4yo's and that is good for future depth as the younger stayers have to replace the always going around year after year types eventually.
