Winner of the New Zealand Oaks (Gr.1, 2400m) last March, Sentimental Miss showed similar staying qualities here in a return to form for her third win at start 17.

She was midfield with circuit to run and improved to be fifth (rails) starting the back straight. From the 800m she edged closer to the pace and turning in moved away from the fence to challenge. She took a while to wind up, joined the leaders inside the 100m and stayed on best by three-quarters of a length at the line.

Hunta Pence sat a handy third from the 800m, second into the straight and was the first to challenge yet didn't reach the lead until the 100m but was outstayed, having to settle for second.

Platinum Invador was fourth-last at the 600m, pulled widest but one into the straight and kept up a strong run to the line for third.

Yatima was a wide sixth turning in and kept on solidly for fourth.

Steelform Roofing Wanganui Cup (LR)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This Listed Open Handicap over 2040m saw the 4yo mare Sentimental Miss finally show some form this season after several starts in and no joy. She won the G1 NZ Oaks (2400m) last season and had not been top three in her five starts before today albeit in a couple of those she ran well but flopped in the other three outings. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were fourth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (two-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a neck in front), fifth (on the fence and four lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), second (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (five-off the inside and four lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and two lengths in front). The track raced on pace and closer in all day and no double-digit barrier won with gate eight the widest to score. In the eight races just three placings came from double-digit draws showing the track bias was closer in and not too far away on settling or up and in to describe it in more easy to understand terms. Sentimental Miss raced fifth the inner then came off the inside near the home turn before coming up fourth and five-off the inside turning for home. She sustained her momentum to lead with 25m to go and ended up scoring by three-quarters of a length in 2:05.31. It was her third win in seventeen starts and two of those successes have come at G1 and now Listed level. Hunta Pence raced third the inner and was through second before the home turn then a close second with 100m to go and in fact led at the 50m briefly before being headed 25m later. Platinum Invador ran on very well from ninth turning for home to defy the track bias all day and was only beaten just over a length. His run on style would be rewarded on roomier tracks after this with a G3 win, a G3 placing, a G2 placing and a G1 placing over 3200m in March. Yatima ran home solidly from seventh on settling while Balham fought on well from eighth the inner. The leader Portland Jimmy was rising multiple grades in this and having a first Blacktype outing and was swamped the final 25m. Overtheriver ran on well late from tenth while Sergeant Blast chased the clear leader and weakened to finish eight and beaten three and a half lengths. Red Sierra weakened too after racing handy and needs rain-affected footing. The rest got beaten almost five lengths and over nine lengths. It was a reasonable strength Listed field and proved to be a decent future source with two Blacktype winners in Platinum Invador and Sergeant Blast.
