Singapore Racing - Weekend Review : 1st and 4th January 2020

3 minute read

The new racing season kicked off in Singapore last week with a number of promising types saluting the judge across the two meetings.

On New Year's Day, the Leticia Dragon trained Surge showed sharp improvement in his second start in Singapore, taking out the final event.

Formerly based in Australia under the care of James Cummings [Old Name: Osorno], Surge failed to fire in his Singapore debut, before a freshen up (45 days) and a drop back in trip quickly paid dividends.

Lining up over 1000m, Surge was forced to race wide without cover throughout, but his class shone through when too strong late, scoring by half a length.

Only lightly raced, Surged notched up his second win from 12 starts and looks to have more to offer in his new surroundings.

As a two-year-old he displayed above average ability rated 104 by Timeform.

While unable to get back to that level at three, his raw ratings weren't that far apart, once taking out the weight-for-age component.

He returned a Timeform rating of 70 when winning last Wednesday and certainly has more to come.

Prior to being sold and transferred to Singapore, Surge returned a Timeform rating of 91, in what was his final start for James Cummings.

While never easy with these imports, if Dragon can get him back to that level, he has many wins in store.

The best part about that rating was he achieved it over 1250m and should improve further when stepped up in trip.

Now rated 66, he still appears well treated by the handicapper and is one to follow.

On Saturday the Michael Clements trained Big Hearted was arguably the win of the day when coming from near last in the 1200m event.

A handy winner over 1400m the start prior, he reacted well off a freshen up (43 days) and really launched late under Simon Kok.

A winner of four of his seven starts, he returned a new career peak on Saturday and the sectionals suggest there is certainly more to come.

A notable second behind Inferno in the Group 3 SAAS Fee Stakes three starts back, he has since confirmed that was no fluke and is certainly one to follow.

In turn it also gives a further push for Inferno, who really could be anything.
