Bulldogs face four-day break in AFLW swap

3 minute read

The AFLW has been forced to schedule midweek games in response to Western Australia's decision not to open its border.

The Western Bulldogs' COVID-enforced break will come to an abrupt end with the AFLW side to play two games in the space of five days.

The AFLW fixture was tweaked again on Monday to adjust to the news that Western Australia's border will no longer open on February 5.

The round six match between Collingwood and West Coast, and the round 10 match between the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle will now be played on Tuesday, February 1.

The Bulldogs, who haven't been in action since their round one loss to Melbourne on January 8, will take on GWS at Henson Park this Friday as part of the round four schedule.

It means they will front up to the high-flying Dockers in a midweek match just four days after facing GWS.

West Coast will also be limited to a four-day break between games, while Fremantle and Collingwood have a five-day break.

Fremantle and West Coast are currently based in Victoria, but they remain hopeful they will be able to play at least some games in Perth this season.

The decision to schedule the two Tuesday matches was made to ensure Fremantle and West Coast could play additional games now, which will result in greater fixturing flexibility for future rounds once more is known about WA's border reopening.

"We remain cognisant of the outside-football commitments of many players and staff from WA who are currently on the road in Victoria, and we thank them for their commitment and understanding," AFL competition manager Laura Kane said.
