McClelland cops AFLW ban for knee to groin

3 minute read

Richmond's Laura McClelland and West Coast's Evie Gooch have been offered one-match bans by the AFLW match review.

Richmond utility Laura McClelland has been offered a one-match AFLW ban for kneeing Fremantle's Ebony Antonio in the groin during Saturday's 30-point loss to the Dockers.

Antonio had just dished off a handball when McClelland stuck out her left knee and charged into the veteran Docker.

The hit left Antonio writhing in pain, and the incident was assessed as careless conduct, medium impact and groin contact, drawing a one-match ban as a first offence.

McClelland's teammate Tayla Stahl can escape with a reprimand for her dangerous tackle on Emma O'Driscoll.

The incident, which was deemed as careless conduct, low impact, and high contact, normally draws a $400 sanction, but Stahl can accept a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

West Coast defender Evie Gooch has been offered a one-match ban for striking Adelaide's Justine Mules.

Gooch had been tackled to the ground and the whistle had been blown when she stuck out her arm and elbowed Mules in the face.

The AFLW match review classified the strike as intentional, low impact, and high contact.

GWS midfielder Katie Loynes can escape with a reprimand for her rough conduct charge against North Melbourne's Daria Bannister.
