Glenn Maxwell has been booked in for elbow surgery and will miss Australia's limited-overs tour of South Africa.

Maxwell, selected in Australia's Twenty20 and ODI squads, was set to depart later this week but he has been replaced in both squads by D'Arcy Short.

Maxwell will have arthroscopic surgery on Thursday then spend up to two months on the sidelines.
