New Melbourne Renegades coach David Saker says he's searching for fresh signings after taking charge of the underperforming BBL franchise.

Saker, who coached the Renegades five seasons ago, is returning to the role for the next two BBL seasons.

Saker takes over from Michael Klinger, who stood down after the Renegades finished bottom for the second consecutive tournament.

"We'll be looking to add to this group over the next few months to ensure we've got plenty of options when the season gets underway," Saker said in a statement on Thursday.

Saker is a former Australian bowling coach who has also held similar roles with England and Sri Lanka.

Cricket Victoria's general manager of cricket Shaun Graf said Saker was selected in favour of applicants from overseas and domestically.

"Sakes is a highly experienced and well-regarded international cricket coach with a proven ability to mould a team," Graf said.

"He possesses a great combination of technical and tactical knowledge while also having a clear understanding on how to bring players together and ensure they're working as a disciplined unit.

"His knowledge of the BBL, the local players and potential international recruits has enabled him to hit the ground running."
