Martin's purple patch extends to Qld Open

3 minute read

Andrew Martin has grabbed an early share of the Queensland Open lead just days after a four-eagle front nine propelled him to The Players Series title.

Andrew Martin has continued his hot form with a five-under-par 67 to hold a share of the first-round lead at the Queensland Open on the Sunshine Coast.

The Bendigo pro managed a world record-equalling four eagles on the front nine in a final round of 61 to win The Players Series in Sydney on Sunday.

But on Friday the 36-year-old showed he was still hungry on a rain-impacted first round at Pelican Waters Golf Club, where nearly half the field failed to finish because of a near-three hour rain delay.

Martin enjoyed six birdies in eight holes, including five in a row to share the lead with Queensland veteran Michael Wright, Newcastle's Blake Windred and 2015 Queensland Open champion David Bransdon.

"We have the NSW Open next week and a fair bit of time off after that so it's knuckle down time when I'm playing good golf ... I can enjoy things afterwards," Martin said.

"I'm lucky there wasn't anything open too late when I got to the Sunshine Coast last Sunday night (straight after the Sydney win) because my travelling mates (Ash Hall, Josh Younger and Max McCardle) wanted to be a bad influence."

Amateur Justin Morley was also five-under through 15 holes while Steph Kyriacou, who started birdie-birdie, and young amateur Grace Kim both shot two-over 74 to fare the best of the six women in the field.
