Jason Day's hopes of contesting this month's US Open have taken a hit after he missed the pro-am for this week's US PGA Tour event in Columbus, Ohio.

Jason Day's near decade-long streak of majors is at risk of coming to an end after the former world No.1 skipped the pro-am for this week's US PGA Tour event in Ohio.

Day was anxiously awaiting the birth of his fourth child, with wife Ellie several days overdue when he skipped his final practice round for The Memorial Tournament in his adopted home state.

Having dropped out of the world's top 60, Day needs a strong result - likely a top-five finish - to secure his place in the field for the US Open starting on June 17 at Torrey Pines, the scene of two of his 12 PGA Tour victories.

Despite having earlier ruled out taking part in US Open sectional qualifying, Day remains entered in the event.

The 34-year-old has contested 34 consecutive major championships since missing the 2012 British Open to be at the birth of his first child, son Dash.

He's posted an impressive 13 top-10 finishes during that stint, including his victory at the 2015 US PGA Championship.

Fellow Australians Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones, Cam Davis and Lucas Herbert are all teeing up at Muirfield Village.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed layout has undergone considerable renovation, removing much of Day's local knowledge.

"They've made some pretty significant changes and at the moment it's a bit mixed emotions because I loved the course, personally, how it was for myself," Scott said.

"We'll see how it plays out this week. There's some big changes early on in the course. Some are quite friendly and some of them will challenge us."

Scott missed the cut at last month's US PGA Championship following a poor opening round.

"So hopefully I can get four good rounds in here so I can go into the US Open with some confidence," he said.

"There's a couple of big weeks coming up."
