Australia's water polo women have lost 8-7 to the Netherlands and will now face Russia in the World League Super Final quarter-final.

Australia's water polo women will face Russia in the quarter-final of the World League Super Final after falling 8-7 to the Netherlands in their final group-stage clash and finishing third in their pool.

The Stingers were up 3-2 at the end of the first quarter but fell behind at halftime and couldn't claw the Dutch back, despite a late surge.

They'll now face Russia on Saturday, to whom they lost in the 2018 World Cup but defeated at the 2017 World Championships.

In their earlier Budapest group-stage games, Australia defeated China 10-8 and lost to European powerhouses Italy 11-9.

"We had a number of opportunities (to) break the game's flow but were unable to ... but in extra-man I thought we did well," coach Predrag Mihailovic said.
