One of Michael Lynagh's three sons, Tom, has signed to play Super Rugby with Queensland, following in the footsteps of his former Wallabies great father.

Tom Lynagh, the teenage son of former Wallabies great Michael Lynagh, has signed a Super Rugby deal with the Queensland Reds.

Following in his father's footsteps, five-eighth Tom has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal through to 2023.

Michael Lynagh played 100 games for Queensland and captained the Reds in three seasons (1988, 1990-91), while he was part of the Wallabies' 1991 World Cup-winning side.

Tom joins a growing tradition of father-son pairings to play for the Reds which includes Sam Scott-Young and his son Angus, and also Brendan Nasser whose son Josh is in the current Queensland squad.

17-year-old Lynagh is currently playing within the Harlequins and England Academy system in the UK where he grew up.

Reds general manager of professional rugby Sam Cordingley said Tom had similar traits to his father.

"Like his father, Tom is a very astute five-eighth, but he has certainly created his own path," Cordingley said.

"Tom has genuine X-factor with ball in hand which is supported by his point of difference in speed and acceleration and his his kicking game is also impressive both out of hand and at goal.

"As a developing talent Tom is held in the highest regard internationally given he qualifies for multiple nations. We are really pleased that he has committed to the Reds and Australian Rugby."

One of three Lynagh boys, Tom qualifies to play for Australia, England and Italy, where he was born and the home country of his mother.
