Matilda McCormick joins Real Betis

3 minute read

Defender Jenna McCormick has joined the exodus of Matildas from the W-League to Europe, signing with Spanish outfit Real Betis.

Jenna McCormick is the latest Matilda to secure a high-profile move to Europe after signing with Real Betis for the next two seasons.

The central defender joins the Primera Division Femenina club from W-League outfit Melbourne Victory.

"Please(d) to announce I'll be joining (Real Betis) for the next 2 seasons," McCormick wrote on Twitter.

"Very excited for this opportunity and looking forward to getting started!"

The 25-year-old joins ex-Victory teammate Laura Brock, who recently signed at French club En Avant de Guingamp, in departing for Europe.

Youngster Alex Chidiac (Atletico Madrid) is the only other Matilda currently signed to a Spanish club.

McCormick previously played in Iceland and Norway and had also made her mark in AFLW, winning premierships with Adelaide in 2017 and 2019 before putting her footy career on hold in a bid to crack the Matildas squad.

That effort paid off when McCormick made her international debut against Chile last November.

The majority of the Matildas' regulars have now signed in Europe.

Captain Sam Kerr (Chelsea), Caitlin Foord (Arsenal), Hayley Raso and Chloe Logarzo (Bristol City) were the first to sign at English clubs.

Steph Catley and goalkeeper Lydia Williams recently joined Foord at Arsenal while young gun Ellie Carpenter is at French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais.

Emily van Egmond and Alanna Kennedy are yet to announce their plans but are expected to land in Europe.
