Jan 16, 2021 TRENTHAM 1600m $210.00 G1 (1:37.67)

Race Synopsis:This G1 3yo only mile was won by the Australian bred filly Bonham that was the worst ridden runner in the race but stole the event turning for and hung on to score by a neck in 1:37.67. The filly was back and wide away and caught deep eighth albeit with cover after a quarter of the race and it was then she got sent forward hoping to get in somewhere. She never did so pressed on up to fifth then third wide across the top before taking the lead turning for home. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were ninth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), eighth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), ninth (on the fence and four lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and half a length in front), seventh (five-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), led (three-off the fence and a head in front), fourth (five-off the inside and eleven lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the fence and two lengths from the leader) and second (six-off the fence and a length from the leader). Bonham kicked away the run home was clear at the 100m then held on to repel the odds on favourite Brando at the line. It was the fourth win from five outings for Bonham and her only miss so far came in the G1 1000 Guineas at Riccarton last November when seventh home after being wide with cover in the midfield. She was the worst ridden runner in the race today but was rewarded with the win and racing does throw up these instances more often than you think and today it came at G1. Second home was the odds on Brando that came home hard after a less than exemplary ride by the leading jockey Danielle Johnson. She settled the odds on colt sixth the outer covered up then was eighth across the top but getting too far away at this point and was also jostled at the 400m when finally getting into clear air. The colt unleashed to reach third at the 200m and was second at the 50m but the post came up too soon. He lost his right front plate in the running too so a lot went wrong with the odds on pop. What he showed today was the mile is not a worry and he will run further and also he is still learning his raceday craft. Wild Moose ran a brave third after being fifth and wide away and then going up second the outer at the 500m. He was third turning for home and fourth at the 200m and 100m but did dig deep to gain the Blacktype placing with 25m to go. Tokorangi ran another blinder finding the line hard again from the rear duo the inner on settling and being tenth turning for home. The filly ran home well to be beaten just over three lengths and has gone some massive races at Group and Listed level. She has now run fifth at G1 in the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton and fourth today at G1, both coming at the mile. Invisible Spirit soon led and was headed turning for home but will still second at the 200m and 100m before weakening to finish fifth beaten just over three and a half lengths. Watchmaker fought on the inside from seventh the inner on setting while the maiden Moana battled away for seventh after being ninth turning for home. Basarwa ran on from tenth on settling and being last turning for home as he did find the line well enough late. The rest were beaten two and a half lengths and a fraction more home as the last three crossed the line together. Frontman (third last) and Whimsical (last) were poor with the former stopping after racing second then third the outer and the latter was fourth then sixth across the top. The runner up Brando would have won but for the ride but the winner Bonham was ridden a lot worse and won, so it is an all on the day proposition. Luck plays a larger role than you think or care too in these Group races. The first two home were superior on the day but there is awful lot to like about the fourth finisher Tokorangi and even Barsawa the eighth finisher had some merit. A good filly beat a good colt today.
