Race Synopsis:This first G1 of the season saw a monumental boilover when a fresh up Callsign Mav won by threequarters of a length at 82-1, after trailing the leaders on the inner to the home turn. The 4yo gelding was fresh up and after going through to second at the 250m led at the 200m and never looked like being caught thereafter scoring in 1:22.12. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (three-off the inside and a length clear), fourth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), led (six lengths clear centre track), third (trailed inner and length and a half from the leader), fifth (five wide and three and a half lengths from the leader), sixth (on the inside and four lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fourth (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), third (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fourth (on the inside and two lengths from the leader) and led (three lengths ahead the fence). It was the fourth win in eleven outings for the 4yo Callsign Mav and all of his four win have come at Hawke's Bay now with this being his second attempt at G1. He had in four runs prior run a distant second at G2 at the Hawke's Bay Guineas (1400m) behind Catalyst, after settling down second and chasing thereafter. Catalyst would win the G1 2000 Guineas easily at his next outing. Fifth home in this race was the Australian bred Sherwood Forest, which would win the G1 NZ Derby (2400m) easily at the end of February. He had run third in the G1 2000 Guineas behind Catalyst. So now we have three G1 winners coming from one source with the win of Callsign Mav. The runner up today was the fast finishing fresh up 6yo mare Supera that unleashed hard from twelfth the inside turning for home. She fair flew when into the clear one-off late and reached second the final 5m in what was a spectacular return. Today was her fifth run at G1 and now she has three placings and a fourth at the highest level. Advantage, the Australian bred 5yo mare, ran at odds on ($1.80) and a tardy start proved costly as she then had to be used up to recover ninth the inner then was worked off to the outer across the top. She then surged to fourth at the 200m and was second at the 100m but the winner had stolen a winning march by then and she lost second the last 5m. Jennifer Eccles ran on gamely for fourth beaten just under two lengths after racing seventh the inside to the home turn. She found the line well to reach fourth the final 25m and looks to have plenty of scope for improvement to come. Deefield at $67 set the pace from a wide gate and once headed at the 200m by the eventual winner was still third still at the 100m but he wilted late and finished fifth. Tavi Mac also from a wide gate jumped well to settle second the outer and he was third across the top to the home turn and fighting hard still when fourth at the 100m before wilting. Vancooga at $83, a one-win galloper at just his ninth ever outing, ran home hard after being tardy and last away. He was fourteenth the inner turning for home and tenth still at the 100m but came home very strongly the final 50m. Kiwi Ida, the Australian bred mare, raced tenth and wide then was five-deep across the top and turned for home ninth and the deepest runner. She wilted late for eighth but was beaten under three and a half lengths and then was found to be suffering the thumps post race. Loire was noticed running on late from last the inside while Pinmedown ran home the widest from thirteenth on settling the final 200m. Shadows Cast raced sixth wide and wilted the run home but was only beaten just under four and a half lengths. Guillada from second last on settling ran twelfth beaten five lengths. Mr Universe from eleventh on the home turn just plugged while Germanicus from tenth turning for home had no finish either. Bavella was travelling fifth between runners but got into a barging dual with Shadows Cast and thereafter never put in so his second last beaten over nine lengths can be forgiven. Last home was The Mitigator that was fourth wide and then got over second the outer across the top before stopping the run home and ending up last beaten just over eleven lengths. The first four home all drew single digits while the next five home all drew double digit draws. Second, third and fourth all came from back in the field, so the jury is still out whether the right runner won but clearly on the pace had an advantage with the winner, the fifth and sixth finishers all turning for home the running fourth, first and third.
