GROUPIES - Spring 2019 - round 1 -  Winx Stakes

Though the mighty mare has now been retired, the race named in her honour kicks off the Spring racing season and the Groupies 2019/2020 Tipping Competition.

The field for the 2019 Winx Stakes is below and ten interesting runners will be contesting for the prize.

For the benefit of any new players here are the rules of play.

Rules

The Groupies tip Group One Races only, a simple formula that has stood the test of time through the years since the competition was devised by Tontonan in 2003.

There are 31 Group One races this Spring, starting with the Winx Stakes on 24 August and concluding with the Kingston Town Classic on December 7th.

Tipping

Each week a tipping thread will be posted a few days before the event/s (on Thursday for Saturday meetings, for instance). All you have to do is place one tip for each Group One race and nominate a substitute if you so wish. (see below)

Scoring  (TAB/Ubet dividends)

1st – 5 points win dividend + place dividend

2nd – 2 points + place dividend

3rd – 1 point + place dividend.

Substitutes (optional)

Tipsters can nominate a substitute, preferably designated with brackets (…).Substitutes will only count if your first selection is scratched and the sub wins or runs a place.

If no sub is nominated and your selection is scratched - tough luck - though if time permits before the race in question, you may select a replacement.

It goes without saying that all tips must be registered prior to race start time.

With the new forum being a vast improvement on the old one, it is much easier to place tips or change your selection, with posts being registered in real time, with no waiting for moderation.

Results will be posted regularly, probably on the Sunday following or shortly thereafter.

The Groupies is open to all genuine contenders and new players are welcome to try their luck and vye for Groupies Champion of the Spring.

GROUPIES RESULTS -Autumn Final Scores and Tatts Tiara Results

After a marathon 43 (74 over a season) Group 1 races, the final results are in.

The final battle ended up a three horse race, with Wilks, myself and Ramses all in contention for Group 1 glory in the Groupies Autumn and Yearly Championships.

Thanks to Invincibella yours truly is the Autumn Groupies Champion, which I won comfortably from Wilks, who failed to score this week. Ramses finished third.

Wilks, however, remained unbeatable at the head of 2018/2019 Leaderboard, winning by a good margin from myself, with Ramses holding on for third.

I must admit I was  pleasantly surprised by my tipping prowess, or lucky selections as is probably the case.

Only four Groupies managed to win points this week, De Lago Dude the only other tipster for Invincibella. Oldman and The Mighty Quinn scored points for second placed Pohukutawa.

Thanks to all who participated in the 2018/2019 Groupies Tipping Competition, which still manages to attract a worthwhile number of contestants despite the moribund state of the R & S Forum.

The Groupies will return in mid August with the first Group 1 of the Spring racing season, that being the Winx Warwick Stakes on 17 August.

With the new improved R&S Forum it should be easier to post tips in the future - and in real time too!

GROUPIES Autumn 2019 Final - round 18 - Tatts Tiara

The final Group 1 race of 2018/2019 racing season is set to run at Eagle Farm this Saturday and a quite classy field of mares and  fillies has accepted to contest the Tatts Tiara, won by Prompt Response last year.

With the new Forum appearing to be an improvement on the old one and in working order, hopefully tipping on this thread will be easier than the last time.

Wilks holds top spot on both Leaderboards. Can he be toppled with a ruffie?

GROUPIES Autumn round 17 JJ Atkins Plate / Queensland Derby/ Stradbroke Handicap

Lets hope this thread gets through successfully on the new Forum. A pity about the formatting, as the new version doesn't seem to like html tags or even paragraph breaks.

Anyway, a super Saturday of racing with three Group 1 events will challenge the tipping prowess of the Groupies.

It's your second last chance to score substantial points and the Groupies championships are headed for a close finish where a number of players can win.

GROUPIES Autumn 2019 round 16 - Queensland Oaks

Four years ago the Queensland Oaks was the second race in what was to become Winx record breaking winning streak and her first Group 1 victory of 25 all up.

Whether this year's Oaks winner can go on her to match her brilliance is a moot point, but a full field of staying fillies will be vying for a Group 1 glory

GROUPIES RESULTS - Autumn 2019 round 15 - Kingsford Smith Cup

The Bostonian demonstrated that he was not a one Group 1 race wonder, registering an impressive victory in the Kingsford Smith Cup, and doing so at pretty good odds.

Only three Groupies managed to score points this round, myself and Whealey being the sole tipsters for The Bostonian, and Percy1 scoring third place points for Trekking.

Nobody tipped the runner up Princess Posh whose score for second place, was greater than that of the winner!

Much to my surprise I'm now top of both Leaderboards. Whether this unusual good tipping form will continue is yet to be seen.

GROUPIES RESULTS - Autumn 2019 round 14 - Doomben Cup / The Goodwood

Unfortunately, with the R & S Forum being unstable yesterday, it appears that some regular Groupies were unable to lodge their tips. Let's hope with the launch of the new Racing & Sports site, these problems will be not occur in the future.

Those who did manage to place tips had varied success, with only Hitensile tipping the winning Group 1 double and benefitting from the generous odds for both winners to score 52.2 points.

Yours truly was the only other tipster for Goodwood winner Despatch, and Wilks the only other tipster for Kenedna in the Doomben Cup.

As a consequence both Leaderboards have been reshuffled with myself snatching the lead on the Autumn Board, while Hitensile jumped from 10th position to second place, relegating long time leader, Ramses, to third.

Wilks still has a firm lead on the Yearly board ahead of yours truly who has displaced Ramses from second place.

If the trend for long shot winners continues, expect the order of the Leaderboards to change again before the final round.
