The racecourse is located five minutes from the Port Augusta CBD and just 30 minutes from the Flinders Ranges and it comprises three different grades of sand with either oil or water used as a binding agent. Racing began at Port Augusta in 1881 and it has been the major racing centre in the north of South Australia and at the apex of the Spencer Gulf triangle made up of other major industrial centres Whyalla and Port Pirie.

Racing is conducted by the Port Augusta Racing Club 10 times a year during a racing season that runs from early April to the end of August and the highlights of the Port August season are the Whyalla Cup in June and City of Port Augusta Cup in July. The Racing Club supports more than a dozen trainers using the racecourse facilities. The historic Port Augusta racecourse grandstand affords spectacular views of the magnificent ranges. It has a big turning circumference of 2100 metres and a home straight of 270 metres. Races are conducted over distances from 1100m to 2200m with a long chute leaving the course proper at the 1300m providing starts for races over 1400m and 1600m.
