Irish-bred stayer Tom Melbourne has now won four of his last five starts, albeit after racing erratically in the final stages before scoring here. He went forward in the early stages and then raced in second place behind a good tempo (set by Koroibete). He moved up to easily take the lead (wide out in better going) nearing the home turn but then ducked back and struck the inside rails in the straight, proving a very difficult ride but he still lasted to win quite clearly. High Opinion was well back in seventh place, made ground from the 800m to be a distant second at the home turn and gradually made ground, without threatening the winner for second. Hippopus raced back in third place, was under pressure in the heavy conditions from the 600m and kept plugging on for a distant third. The second favourite Tashbeeh was always well back and appeared to be struggling in the going before plugging on late for a distant sixth.
