Respondent came from last on the home turn to finish powerfully to prove far the better in a good renewal of the WA Derby. Respondent settled down in second last position but when the pace went on at the 1000m he found himself a clear last. Still a long way out of his ground on cornering for him he looked for runs between runners closer back towards the fence. He finished on strongly and stayed the 2400m well to win with a little in reserve. The favourite Ihtsahymn had his chance. He had a lovely run in the race fourth one out with a trail. He was forced to make a move three wide from the 800m when the horse in front of him tired back through the field. He looked poised for victory on turning for home and took at clear lead in the straight but he tired on his run to finish second. Possibly not seeing out the 2400m. *ANZ
