Rommel began well and settled in an ideal spot, third on the rails, following a good pace (first 1000m 60.04). He moved to second rounding the home turn to set out after the tearaway leader (Furious Dame). He took the lead at the 200m and then fought back well to score by half a length, putting up a solid effort in winning, his first win in five starts this preparation. The favourite, the previously unbeaten Disposition did not show much early pace from his good barrier (2) and settled back in fifth place. He was giving the leader about eight lengths as the commenced a run at 600m, he got to third at the 100m and then kept battling on well for second. He raced in a manner that suggests he is looking for longer. Say Geronimo was a handy fourth to the turn and held on for third, beaten just under two lengths while the second favourite Outlaw Pete ran on from seventh at the turn for (2.8 lengths) fourth.
