Classy WA mare Elite Belle was eased from her wide barrier (12) and settled back in 13th place on the rails. She stuck to the rails rounding the home turn, got a split between runners nearing the 200m, sprinted to the lead at the 100m and went on to win by good style by almost a length. Another locally-trained mare Balmont Girl was also well back to the turn, being 12th between runners on straightening. She switched deep at the 200m and caught the eye with her late-closing second. The Chris Wallertrained Moriarty was near last and wide with cover to the home turn. He went to the centre of the track at the 300m and finished strongly for a very good third. Smokin’ Joey was seventh, one off the rails, looked a threat at the 200m and then fought on for fourth, beaten a length. Favourite The Cleaner led as usual, was steadied in the early stages but ran along at a strong tempo from 1000m. He tired under his top weight (58kg) from the 200m to finish ninth (beaten three lengths) still putting up a game effort at the end of a very successful preparation.
