First Among Equals put up a smart first-up performance. He was ridden quietly from his outside barrier (12) and settled in back in eighth place, but trapped three deep. He moved up well (still wide) approaching the home turn, sprinted to challenge nearing the 100m and finished too well, appearing to score with something in hand in an impressive effort. Rock Magic settled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, before improving well coming to the home turn. He briefly looked the winner when he hit the front at the 100m but he could not hold off the late challenge of the winner in a strong effort under his 59kg top weight. Rebel King went to the front, set quite a reasonable tempo and held on well in the straight to take the minor placing.
