Deserving credit for great perseverance, War God, who went 16 races before breaking maiden, caused a minor upset to win his eighth race and take his earnings to $328,650. He was third early but steadily dropped back through the field (rails) to be sixth midway around the bend. The field was compact but he was locked away needing a run. Into the straight the first three broke away leaving room to pull out and make a challenge and rider Patrick Carbery seized the chance, drove him to catch the leaders and caught them at the 50m to edge into the lead short of the post. Durendal sat second (rails) into the straight, found room, challenged for the lead, was headed then fought back but was unable to match the winner. Rebel King took the lead at the 200m, holding to the 50m but was outfinished. Flying Time was five wide turning in and ran on for fourth.
