Chris Waller-trained three-year-old Devil Hawk, a brother to 2013 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hawkspur (Purrealist), resumed after three two-year-old starts to win his first race in most promising style. He did not show any pace from his inside barrier (1) and settled in last place in the six-horse field. He improved nicely (switching deeper) nearing the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then drew clear to score quite impressively. He should appreciate further and he looks to have a very good future. Favourite Metallic Crown went to the front, appeared to be travelling well at the home turn but had no answer to the winner’s challenge to finish second. Trick Star was a handy fourth to the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then fought on for third.
