Caulfield Gneas Prelude (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: CG Type: OPEN

The SA-trained Éclair Big Bang was first away, he then eased to get a good trip in third place on the rails. He moved through to second at the turn, three lengths away from the leader (El Roca, who dashed clear). He then came with a well-timed run to take the lead at the 100m and he went on to win impressively, scoring by three quarter lengths. The NZ-trained colt El Roca soon crossed to the lead. He travelled well in front and looked the winner as he raced clear rounding the home turn. He was only headed in the closing stages, holding on for a good second at his Australian debut. Darley’s Long John settled about eighth, one off the rails. He improved three wide approaching the home turn but was still giving the leader about seven lengths at the 300m. He put in a strong run from that point, continually making ground for a late-closing third. It was a particularly good trial for the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on 2 November and he is racing like that distance will suit. Charlie Boy was eased from his inside barrier (1) and settled ninth on the rails. He was still well back at the turn and kept making ground along the rails, without threatening, for a sound fourth. Weinholt was near last to the 600m, switched very wide at the 300m and made good ground for fifth, also looking suited to further. Marwood was about seventh between runners to the turn and he battled on quite well in the straight for sixth, considering his rise in class after two impressive country wins. Fast ‘N’ Rocking (seventh) was fifth on the rails to the turn and looked to have every chance. He now seems to be racing below his best form. *ANZ
