The Queensland-trained Solzhenitsyn won his second successive Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) putting up a good performance with his rise to 58kg. He began well and eased to get a good trip back in fifth place one off the rails. He moved up nicely three wide rounding the home turn, hit the lead at the 200m and drew clear from the 100m to win well by just over a length. The French galloper Trevieres was well back in 12th place most of the way to the 600m, where he was giving the leader about ten lengths. He switched wide rounding the home turn and made up considerable ground for a late-closing second, in an attractive Australian debut. Blackie was tenth to the 800m before moving up wide at the home turn. He put in a quick run to challenge at the 200m and kept fighting on for a very good third. Speediness went back from his wide barrier (16) and raced near last in the 17-horse field to the 600m. He went to the extreme outside at the turn and ran on well for a good (two and half lengths) fourth. He continues to race well from difficult barriers. Dany The Fox was a handy sixth most of the way to the 600m and battled on for fifth, Mutual Trust (sixth) was handy all the way while Linton was about same most of the way and held on for eighth, beaten just under four lengths. *ANZ
