The Gai Waterhouse-trained Spurtonic went straight to the lead and Glen Boss was able to steady the pace with the first 1400m being run in a moderate 1:28.79, before increasing the tempo nearing the 600m point. He grabbed a break at the 200m and went on to score comfortably, being eased down approaching the post to score by just over two and a quarter lengths. Bass Strait was seventh on the rails to the 600m and then got a clear run along the rails rounding the home turn. He went to second passing the 200m and battled on to hold that position to the post. Garud was third on the rails to the 600m, challenged on straightening and then kept fighting on for third, after appearing to have every chance. Honorius was fourth one out and one back to the 600m before moving up at the turn. He put in a run at the 300m then just kept battling on under his top weight (58kg) for fourth. *ANZ
